NIPPLE AREOLA RECONSTRUCTION

Breast reconstruction is considered complete only when the nipple-areola complex (the brown-pigmented area around the nipple) is reconstructed as well. Then, the new breast acquires a normal appearance. The creation of the nipple takes place approximately 3-6 months after breast reconstruction surgery. For the reconstruction of the new nipple either local tissue or part of the contralateral breast’s nipple is used. The creation of areola around the nipple is achieved either with skin grafts or with special medical tattooing, a simple and painless procedure that can be conducted even in the medical practitioner’s surgery.
